Our Story Begins with Community
For more than 25 years, Ilisaqsivik Society has worked to support the people of Clyde River through programs that promote wellbeing, learning, and opportunity. As a Canadian charity and non-profit organization, Ilisaqsivik develops initiatives that are designed and delivered by Inuit, for Inuit, in Inuktitut.
From building the community library to supporting school meal programs and establishing the Ittaq Heritage and Research Centre, Ilisaqsivik’s work focuses on strengthening the health, culture, and future of the community.

A Community Need Becomes an Opportunity
In 2008, Ilisaqsivik’s leadership began exploring a new idea: creating a business that could both support the community and address a growing challenge in Clyde River.
At the time, the community had very limited accommodations for visitors, making it difficult for professionals and service providers to travel to the region. Without places to stay, many essential visits and projects simply could not happen.
To address this need, Tukumaaq was established as the business arm of Ilisaqsivik, with the goal of creating accommodations while generating profit that could support community programs.
Community-Led Approach
Clyde River is a strong and resilient Inuit community with a long history of working together to meet local needs. Tukumaaq was created as part of this community-driven approach: building local infrastructure that supports economic opportunity, employment, and community wellbeing.
By operating locally owned hotels, the community is able to welcome visitors when needed while ensuring that economic benefits remain in Clyde River.

The Hotels Today
The Naujaaraaluit Hotel opened in 2015, providing modern accommodations for visitors to the community. The hotel takes its name from a nearby cliff visible from Clyde River, meaning “many seagulls” in Inuktitut.
In 2020, Tukumaaq acquired the former Qammaq Hotel, renaming it the Sigjaq Hotel, which means “shoreline.” Together, these hotels provide essential accommodations for visitors travelling to this part of Baffin Island.
